Comparing Dutch health insurances 2025

The first steps
Have you just arrived in the Netherlands? If so, you’ll need to apply for health insurance.
Once you’ve registered at your municipality, you have 4 months from your registration date to apply for health insurance, also called 'zorgverzekering' in Dutch. The insurance start date will always be the day you register in the Netherlands. This is because you are required by law to have health insurance. It also means you’ll need to pay the insurance premium starting from your registration date at the town hall.
Your health insurer may ask for proof that you are required to have health insurance in the Netherlands. They need to confirm that you live or work here. When applying for health insurance, you may be asked to provide certain documents. The following are typically required:
- Passport
- Residence permit
- Employment contract
If you are moving to the Netherlands with your family, you will need to provide these documents for each family member as well.
Once you’ve applied for health insurance, all you need to do is wait for your policy. Insurance companies usually take about two weeks to process your application and send you your policy.
Need medical attention right away?
You can get medical care immediately, even if you’re not insured yet. You can go to a GP or hospital, and they cannot refuse you the care you need. If you're not insured at the time, you might have to pay the costs yourself. However, once you receive your insurance number, you can send the bill to your insurer.

Health insurance in the Netherlands in 2025
- The basic premium for health insurance in 2025 has increased by an average of € 12 per month, adding up to € 144 per year. This rise is driven by growing healthcare costs in the country, mainly due to higher wages for healthcare professionals, increased demand for care from an aging population, and a rise in chronic illnesses. These factors also require more healthcare staff and facilities, leading to higher premiums.
- The healthcare benefit has also gone up in 2025, but it only offsets about two-thirds (64%) of the premium increase. As a result, if you’re eligible for the maximum allowance, you’ll still pay around € 40 more for health insurance. You can find more information about when you qualify for healthcare benefit.
- The mandatory deductible for health insurance continues to be a topic of debate. Currently, it remains at € 385 for 2026, but it’s expected to be halved by 2027. However, you can choose to voluntarily increase it up to a maximum of € 885. Expenses for hospital care and medications are included in the deductible, but certain services - like GP visits and obstetric care - are fully covered by basic insurance.
